The right safari length is not the one that lists the most parks. It is the one that gives you meaningful wildlife time after accounting for roads, gates, meals and lodge changes. Five days can be excellent when focused. Seven days creates balance. Ten days allows a deeper Serengeti experience or a slower pace.

Quick comparison
| Length | Suggested focus | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days | Tarangire, Ngorongoro and one Serengeti base | First safari with limited time |
| 7 days | Tarangire or Manyara, Ngorongoro and 3 nights Serengeti | Balanced Northern Circuit |
| 10 days | Two Serengeti regions plus slower highlands and Tarangire | Migration, photography and families |
A focused 5-day safari
- Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire; afternoon game drive.
- Day 2: Tarangire to the Ngorongoro highlands.
- Day 3: Crater descent, then onward toward Serengeti when timing permits.
- Day 4: Full Serengeti game-drive day.
- Day 5: Morning wildlife time and flight to Arusha, or begin the road return if the schedule allows.
This route is most comfortable with a flight out of Serengeti. Driving both ways uses a large share of a short trip. If the budget does not support a flight, focus on Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro rather than forcing in a distant Serengeti stay.
A balanced 7-day safari
- Days 1–2: Tarangire with two game-drive windows.
- Day 3: Karatu, Lake Manyara or a community-led activity.
- Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater and highlands.
- Days 5–7: Serengeti with two full days, then fly or drive onward.
Seven days is the sweet spot for many first-time travelers. It supports three nights in one Serengeti region and avoids changing accommodation every day.

A deeper 10-day safari
Use the extra nights for depth, not only more stops. A strong 10-day route can spend two nights in Tarangire, two in the Ngorongoro highlands and four or five across one or two Serengeti bases. In migration months, the second Serengeti region should follow likely herd location. Outside migration peaks, central Serengeti can support a rewarding longer stay.
When to add Lake Manyara
Add Manyara for forest, birding and Rift Valley contrast. On a short itinerary, it may be wiser to give Tarangire a second game drive. On a seven- or ten-day trip, Manyara fits naturally between Arusha and Karatu without taking nights from Serengeti.
Private vehicle or fly-in?
A private vehicle supports flexibility, luggage access and a continuous landscape story. Flights are valuable for removing a long return drive or linking northern Serengeti with Arusha or Zanzibar. The best answer is often a drive-in, fly-out combination.
