There's no better way to end an East African safari than with a few days on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. This enchanting spice island, located just off the coast of Tanzania, offers the perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and adventure.
Stone Town: A Cultural Treasure
Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the cultural heart of Zanzibar. This maze of narrow streets, coral stone buildings, and ornately carved wooden doors tells the story of centuries of trade between Africa, Arabia, India, and Europe. Visit the spice markets, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, and the former slave market — now a moving memorial. As evening falls, the Forodhani Gardens come alive with a night market selling Zanzibari street food.
Nungwi & Kendwa: Paradise Beaches
On the northern tip of the island, Nungwi and Kendwa offer the best beaches in Zanzibar. The sand here is powder-white, the water turquoise, and unlike other parts of the island, the tide doesn't retreat far, so you can swim all day. Watch traditional dhow boats sail by, enjoy fresh seafood on the beach, and witness some of the most spectacular sunsets in Africa.
Spice Tours
Zanzibar is known as the "Spice Island" for good reason. A spice tour takes you through plantations where you can see, smell, and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, black pepper, and tropical fruits growing. It's a sensory experience that connects you to the island's history as a major spice trading hub.
Mnemba Atoll: Diving & Snorkeling Paradise
Mnemba Atoll, off the northeast coast, is Zanzibar's premier diving and snorkeling destination. The protected marine reserve is home to over 600 species of coral and an abundance of tropical fish, dolphins, and sea turtles. Even beginners can enjoy the shallow, calm waters teeming with marine life.
Kizimkazi: Dolphin Watching
On the southern coast, the fishing village of Kizimkazi offers the chance to swim with wild dolphins in their natural habitat. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are commonly seen in these waters. Early morning trips offer the best sightings.
Jozani Forest
Home to the rare and endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, Jozani Forest is the last remaining indigenous forest on the island. A guided walk takes you through mangrove swamps and tropical forest, where you'll encounter these playful monkeys and diverse birdlife.
Best Time to Visit: June to October and December to February for the best beach weather. Avoid the long rains (March-May).
