In the early part of the year, migration herds gather across the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti ecosystem. Calving, abundant grazing and predator activity make this an extraordinary time to travel, but the experience covers a broad, unfenced landscape. The best camp is the one positioned for current conditions—not simply the one with the most famous name.

When is the calving period?
Herds often reach the southern plains from roughly December, with a concentration of births commonly associated with late January through February. Movement can continue toward March before herds begin following rain and new grass elsewhere. These are planning patterns, not guarantees; rainfall changes the exact distribution each year.
Ndutu, southern Serengeti and the conservation boundary
“Ndutu” is used broadly in safari conversation, but camps and wildlife can lie across different management areas within the Serengeti–Ngorongoro ecosystem. This affects permits, driving access and the most efficient route. A local planner should confirm exactly where each proposed camp sits and which game-drive areas are accessible.
What you may see
Large wildebeest and zebra herds are the headline. The abundance of vulnerable young can attract lion, cheetah, hyena and other predators. Calving-season viewing can be beautiful and emotionally intense. Give animals space and avoid surrounding a hunt or birth with vehicles.

How many nights should you book?
Three nights provide two full days and are a sensible minimum for a wildlife-focused visit. Four nights give better flexibility if rain shifts the herds or a photographer wants time to wait for behavior. One rushed night leaves too much of the experience to arrival and departure roads.
A practical route
A road itinerary can run Arusha–Tarangire–Ngorongoro–Ndutu, then return through the highlands or continue into central Serengeti. A flight from the Serengeti region to Arusha or Zanzibar can remove a long final drive. Read our itinerary comparison before choosing.
What to pack
Expect warm days, cool early starts and possible rain. Bring a waterproof layer, a warm fleece, binoculars and camera protection. Dust can return quickly between showers, so pack a blower and cloth rather than changing lenses in the open vehicle.
The wider migration is recognized as one of the defining natural processes of the Serengeti World Heritage property. For ecosystem context, visit UNESCO’s Serengeti profile. When you are ready, ask us to match your dates with the right southern base.
